This is going to be another slightly long app review on 'Touchgrind' by Illusion Labs. This game is basically a skateboarding simulation which has fantastic graphics, and the best skateboarding game on the app store there is. It has many boards to select and a great replay value.
Game Modes
I'll start off with the 3 game modes, Warm-up, Jam session and Competition.
Warm-up is really just in a different skate park to jam session and competition and only has 4 different skate parts - grinding pole, box, jumps and a little ramp, this isn't very fun seeing as you can only do a limited amount of tricks without something to jump off and grind onto all in one combo.
Jam Session is the one I play most, and this is the mode that requires you to get the biggest trick score you can - that is, doing lots of tricks in one combo in order to gain more points. This is the big skate park like the competition but you can skate freely without a time limit and do whatever you want, trying out new combos and getting a higher score.
Competition is another fun one but I feel too rushed when I'm playing this mode. This mode enables you to submit your high score to the online rankings. You have to get the highest score within the given time of 100 seconds, doing any tricks you want. In competition there are what we call score multipliers which enable you to really get some high scores, they are x2, x4, x6, x8 and it stops at 8. Once at x8 it obviously times the score in your combo/trick times 8 which brings big numbers.
One of the many features I like about this game is the customization feature. It allows you to customize your own deck, well just the underside where the picture is. Once you go to board selection, there is an option that says customize at the top of the screen, you can then select any image from your photo library and use multi-touch to lay the image out on the board template to suit your needs.
Features:
- Board Selection from 12 boards
- Board customization
- Realistic sounds and graphics
- Nice textures
- 3 game modes
- Good replay value
- True physics
